You may have heard about the Hosta Wheels A Turnin'??Right??
This is a graphic used to describe and classify sports that have developed/ evolved/ resulted from a common parent...they often come in groups...groups of clones that are related. Now they even come in colors, too.
The Wheels Committee has integrated a color wheel design from Bill Meyer, Wheel Committee Member in NJ into their work of compiling hosta sports. This is a visual aid tool to use in the garden to accurately identify colors which exist on hosta leaves. By comparing the 24 colors on the color chart to the actual colors found on the variegated or monocolored forms of hostas, the colors can be described in a standard way using code numbers to identify the colors, not words which may be too ambiguous or too general.
The Wheels Committee asks the cooperation of Inquiring Minds in the Hosta World to use the color chart provided in the attachment to this post, along with the instructions. Print out the color wheel, laminate it for use, experiment with it this summer, make color comparisons to known sports in your garden.Take notes, put down the codes which correspond to the color descriptions of your sports and prepare a post or letter with this data to any member of the Wheels Committee. This data will be passed on to a Member who is compiling the data on hosta color, begnning first with colors of sports, then with other characterisitics.
By your participation you will be learning more about hostas, their colors, sports, and their relationships to sister and brother sports, father and mother sports, uncle and aunt sports, cousins by the dozens sports. You get the idea! It's fun and educational. So remember to keep the color wheel and instructions. Thanks for your help. BTW, we hope to have accurate, standard laminated color wheels for sale at cost at a later date. Stay tuned or be in touch with your favorite Wheels Committee member. If this is all new to you, then seek out a copy of the Hosta Wheels Document and learn more about the phenomena of Hosta sports.
